Information on the "Heartbleed" Online Vulnerability

As reported recently by the media, a major online security vulnerability known as “Heartbleed” could allow attackers steal information such as user names, passwords and the private keys that secure sites use to encrypt and decrypt sensitive data during online transactions.

We have been assured by our third party service provider (Fiserv) that Midland National Bank’s online and mobile banking services have been successfully patched to address any potential vulnerabilities presented by the Heartbleed bug.

Q: Has Midland installed a new security patch to fix the problem?
A:  Security patching was successfully implemented on April 9, 2014. The implementation was tested and confirmed as valid.

Q:  Has Midland changed their encryption keys after the patch was implemented?
A:  As a precautionary step, new certificates will be issued. The new certificates are scheduled to be installed on Sunday, April 13, 2014.

Q: Can Midland confirm no data was stolen prior to discovering the problem?
A:  Midland uses multiple layers of defenses to protect our services and customers. Our customers can continue to conduct their banking securely and without their data being at risk.

Q: Can customers safely log into their accounts?
A:  Yes. Our online banking environment is secure and we have detection methods in place to identify and deter any unauthorized activity.

Q: Should customers change their passwords?
A:  We recommend that our online customers change their passwords regularly – every 45-60 days. However, Midland’s online customers do not need to change their passwords as a result of the Heartbleed vulnerability.

Q: Should customers change their usernames?
A:  Our customers do not need to change their usernames as a result of the Heartbleed vulnerability. While we do not recommend any specific actions by our customers at this time, we can assist customers with changing their user IDs if they wish.

Q: How can I be sure my account information has not been compromised?
A: As always, we recommend that customers monitor their accounts regularly online and/or by reviewing monthly account statements. Customers may also choose to set up alerts to notify them if certain account activity occurs.

Should you have questions or concerns about your accounts, please contact Midland at 316-283-1700.

What is Online Banking?
Personal Online Banking is our online service that allows you to access your account information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Using Midland's Online Banking, you can:

  • View account balances, check images and history
  • 24-hour access to checking, savings, loans and CDs

What do I need to bank online?
Banking online is easy. Personal Online Banking works well on most of today's browsers, and must support 128-bit SSL encryption. If your browser does not support these encryption levels, you'll need to update it. To get started, simply complete the enrollment form to receive your log in information.

Is it safe to Log In if I don't see the lock icon in the corner of the browser window?
Yes, it is safe to Log In. Your user name and password are not transmitted until you submit them by clicking on the "Log In" button. It is at this time that a secure session, or connection, is established between our server and your browser. All information is encrypted using a 128-bit encryption algorithm, which is the strongest encryption available commercially. It is then sent to our Online Banking system to be authenticated.

What types of accounts can I view with Online Banking?
With Internet Banking, you can view all your Midland National Bank accounts, as well as loans.

How often is my account information updated?
Account information is "real time", which provides you with the most current account information available.

How secure is my personal account information?
Midland National Bank uses the latest Internet security available, including secure communications (SSL), firewalls, 128 bit encryption, and operating systems that have been designed to provide maximum security.

Why am I signed off sometimes and I have to sign in again?
If Online Banking has been inactive for a period of time, the system will automatically sign you off to prevent unauthorized use of your accounts, and to prevent others from viewing your information. If this happens, you will simply need to log in again.

Can I pay my bills using Personal Online Banking?
Yes. You can make payments to anyone in the United States from the utility company to the local babysitter. You may schedule payments to be made immediately or on a specified date in the future.
